Automated Sushi Delivery

Automated Sushi Delivery

Upon our return from Nikko, it was time for dinner, and of course, it had to be sushi.

Trip Advisor suggested an interesting place in the Shibya area of Tokyo, so we headed to Uobei Shibuya Dogenzaka. This place is very inexpensive, and has an interesting ordering system. You are assigned a seat place with a touchscreen tablet. In front of you are 3 levels of tracks. You pick selections from the screen (up to 3 at a time), drinks, sushis, sides, desserts, etc.

After confirming your 3 items, you press “Order”, and then wait a bit. In a few minutes the tablet screen indicates your selectins are on their way. You can see your selection zip down one of the tracks towards your place at the counter, where it automatically stops in front of you. You take it off the track, then press the Confirm button on your tablet, and the carrier returns back to the kitchen. At your place at the counter, you have access to unlimited green tea, which you brew yourself with the matcha powder and hot water dispenser in front of you. Also at each seat are small packets of wasabi, soy sauce, pickled ginger, and other condiments. Any drinks you order are delivered by a person, rather than the track.

You order what you want in groups of up to 3 items, and of course can order multiple times. We each had our own tablet to order, and it was interesting to see who could eat the most.

We had lots of fund at this place, and stuffed ourselves, and of couse it was all accompanied by sake.

After about an hour of eating and drinking, we pressed our respective tablet buttons to end our meal, and made our way to the cashier, not even knowing what the final total would be.

To our surprise, we spent a total of $18! We were quite surprised, as Tokyo is supposed to be expensive.
